Jung Sung-Won

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the medical cost and expenditure behavioral patterns for 1 year prior to death and
examine socio-demographic related-factors of the most common causes of cancer such as stomach cancer, colorectal cancer, liver cancer, lung cancer, thyroid cancer- and gender specific cancer: prostate cancer and cervical cancer. Logistic regression model was utilized to investigate the effect of socio-demographic factors between never-visited dead persons (n=3,753) and once or more-visited dead persons (n=40,733). Multiple regression analysis was utilized to estimate medical cost per socio-demographic characteristics of the once or more-visited dead persons (n=40,733). All dead cancer patients have expended 7,911 thousand won during 1-year prior to death. Socio-demographic factors of the dead cancer patientsconcerning use of medical service was age, education level, occupation and marriage status. Particularly, women, beneficiaries, educated and younger ones have expended more than men. Cancer decedents spent almost all their money for medical treatment during last year of life, in particular, one month before death. Further research should explore on the optimal use of medical services during the end-of-life stage.
